History of Fairfax County 1600 – 1899

1742
Fairfax County was founded from the formation of Prince William County.

1757
Present day Loudoun and Fairfax counties were divided.

1865
Economic rebuilding began after the Civil War. Black citizens were given the right to vote and own property.

1944
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was chartered in Fairfax County in May.

1951
Black students demanded that they receive education that was equal to white students. The NAACP filed a case in the Supreme Court which became known as Brown v. Board of Education.

1959
Tuition grants from the state and tax credits from the county allowed for the funding of private schools to educate white children as a way to resist school integration.

1990
The Affordable Dwelling Unit Rental Program began in the county.

2015
The county launched its “Strategic Plan to Facilitate Economic Success” with affordable housing as one of its main goals.

2016
The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority adopted a mission statement that focused on equitable quality of life.

2017
The “One Fairfax” resolution was passed with a focus on equity.

2017
The Fairfax County School Board voted to formally support and endorse the “Fairfax County Statement on Diversity and Inclusion.”
