The Consumer Health Foundation is a dynamic, young foundation created from the sale of the Group Health Association (GHA), a nonprofit, cooperative Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), to Humana, a for-profit HMO. Since our inception in 1997, we have given roughly $13 million to community-based organizations in the D.C. metro area working to improve the health and quality of health care for all, with a focus on addressing racial, ethnic and socio-economic disparities in access, health and health outcomes.

Since our genesis was in a cooperative HMO, when the foundation was launched, the board decided that there should be a membership, just as there had been at GHA – to keep us in touch with and deeply rooted in the community.  Our initial members were predominantly those who had received or provided care at GHA (patients, physicians, nurses and others).  Over the years, our membership has grown to include hundreds of others in the region who are committed to CHF’s mission – people who are dedicated to making a difference in the health of our community and to fostering a greater consumer role in health.

Within our mission, our work centers on reducing the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities that exist in accessing health care and health outcomes.

We will support consumers in their efforts to take control of their own health and participate in all levels of health care decisions. To achieve this, we will integrate consumer voices, interests, and needs into our work.
